Number one professional networking site LinkedIn has introduced a new feature which will feed the curiosity of users. The ‘Who’s viewed your profile’ section is now accompanied by a ‘How you rank’ page which allows users to find out how their profile views compare to everybody else in their network.
‘Who’s viewed your profile’ has always been one of the most popular parts of the site, offering what seems like a sneak peek into who may be interested and what opportunities could be coming a user’s way. And LinkedIn isn’t oblivious to this popularity, limiting the amount of information unless the user goes Premium.
The new stats page capitalises on this user interest in the popularity of their personal information. Besides giving a percentage ranking based on profile views over the past 30 days, the page also shows a percentage for an increase or decline in views. These stats are alongside a few other elements which include a list of the user’s top 10 most viewed connections and a link to tips for improving profile views.
For users, the feature will give a better idea of the popularity of their profile and could give an incentive to become more active on the network. Or at least LinkedIn might be hoping for this effect. When asked if they introduced the feature to get users more active on the network, a representative responded by saying:
“Who’s Viewed Your Profile and features like How You Rank are intended to provide members with data, inspiration and examples to help them increase their presence and discoverability on LinkedIn, whether that’s through improvements to their profile or relevant content that can be shared with their network.”
While this new feature is likely to be welcomed by users, something that may not go down as well is that profile rank is visible to first-degree connections. This poses the question of whether a low rank could be detrimental to how a user is regarded on the network. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this – get the discussion started by commenting below…
