If you have a Facebook page – and if you’re in business you definitely should – then increasing the number of ‘likes’ your page receives is a great way of promoting your organisation. Not only does a high number of likes lend your company credibility, but every time someone likes your page it will be shared on their timeline with potentially viral results. So how can you encourage more people to like your page? Here are five of the best ways.
Facebook allows you to hide premium content that is only unlocked for visitors who’ve liked your page. This is a fairly aggressive method so don’t overdo it, but if you can provide genuine value to convince people the content is worth unlocking, it can be very effective. If you go down this route, don’t forget to make the unlocking proposition prominent on your page.
This should go without saying, but an abandoned page is not going to attract many likes. Try and add something to your page as often as possible, so long as it’s useful or interesting, just to show that it’s still alive.
Filling your page with blatant advertising messages will turn off most visitors. Instead, ask questions, invite participation, and – vitally – engage with visitors when they post to your page. Making people feel like they’re being listened to is a powerful way of engendering positive feelings which will lead naturally to likes.
Look for other Facebook pages in your niche which seem to ignore their users. Once you’ve found one, step into the breach and engage non-commercially with their visitors, making sure to gently point them in your own direction. Free publicity can’t be beaten, especially when it comes at the expense of a competitor.
This is an old technique that many report is no longer so effective, but there’s still life in the old dog yet. Make it easy for your blog or site visitors to like a page by using embedded buttons, but don’t overdo it – soon after these buttons were invented, they spread across the web like a rash, with every page inviting you to like, favourite, star-or-whatever a page on a hundred obscure social networks. Keep it focussed to your Facebook page for best results. In the long term, there’s no substitute for a good Facebook page that people actually choose to like voluntarily, but using these techniques can give your page the helping hand it needs to get the ball rolling.
